Pattern of lines (or "tratteggio") |
Technique used to deal with lacunas which disturb
the overall view of the fresco. It is always done in water-colours so that
it can be reversed (undone) at any time. However, for this project, we chose
to continue using the 19th century technique of reconstructing the continuity
of the imitation architecture (incomplete or broken architecture is not
"believable") while - obviously - making use of a more suitable
method in order to solve two conflicting problems: reconstructing the scene
in its entirety but using a technique (known as "tratteggio")
which ensures that the restored area is immediately recognisable (why would
anyone ever paint a wall - in water-colour at that - with fine vertical
lines - coloured, straight, and parallel - which in no way follow the layout
of the original painting?)

First, the area is marked out and
the sketch is prepared; then, parallel vertical lines are drawn close
together, forming a pattern that in no way corresponds to the original
painting. Centre: one of the phases of the operation. |
