Examples of abrasions on the plaster and on the paint film

Abrasions on the plaster

Areas of worn or damaged plaster can be seen everywhere in the Chapel where dampness has caused damage in the past, associated with the solubility of the calcium carbonate in the plaster, crystallisation of soluble salts, or washing away.

Abrasions on the paint film

Worn or damaged paint film, mainly affecting large areas painted with the "a secco" technique, principally the azurite parts, and caused not only by chemical-physical aspects (see poor cohesion of paint film), but also by mechanical action. But damage of this type was also found in areas previously affected by rising damp, such as the main arch, the adjacent part of the roof vaulting and the end wall of the Chapel.

Colour alteration in the metal alloy of the halo
Alterations in colour

Not much present in the painted layers, but a constant feature of the many metal laminas made of various types of alloys.
