Expenses and administration
The restoration of the Giotto frescoes in the
Scrovegni Chapel, Padua, was financed by the Ministry for the Cultural
and Art Heritage by means of funds raised through the "Gioco del
Lotto" (three-year period 1998-2000) for an amount of 3.5 billion
lire (3.0 net of taxes).
Of this sum, two billion were budgeted for the restoration project. The
rest of the amount went towards communications and spreading information.
This phase will come to an end with the major International Congress on
"Giotto and the Scrovegni Chapel", to be held in Padua, November
21-23, 2002.
The funding includes the gathering, publication and distribution of the
information and data relating to the restoration.
Funding was allocated as follows:
1. Restoration of wall paintings in the nave (Giotto)
2. Restoration of wall paintings and architectural decorations in the
presbytery and apse (Giotto and other artists)
3. Restoration of painted panel depicting the Almighty (Giotto and his
pupils)
4. Digital documentation gathered from various types of surveys (graphic,
photographic, photogrammetric and filmed).
5. Website on the Chapel and its restoration
6. Databank on the Chapel and its restoration
7. Live presentation of restoration project and of work in progress (see
Appointments)
8. Non-specialist publications (printed and in digital form): four booklets,
and a brief Guide to the restored work
9. Specialist publications (printed and in digital form) relating to scientific
surveys carried out, to the restoration project (already available on
the website since June 20, 2001), to the restoration of the Chapel building
and frescoes by Giotto and other artists
10. International Study Conference on Giotto (including publication of
Proceedings)
By keeping to a tight budget, it was also possible to carry out the following
work:
- renewed restoration of the three statues by Giovanni Pisano, restored
by ICR in 1993
- restoration of Enrico Scrovegni's funeral monument
- restoration of the statue of Enrico Scrovegni at prayer
- restoration of the decorations, furnishings and fixtures in the Chapel
Administration
In addition to the overall project (see "why and
wherefore"), the restoration was made possible by a protocol of understanding
between the Ministry for the Cultural heritage and the Padua City Council,
signed on May 31, 2000. Following this, the administrative documents were
drawn up, and the main one, the technical specifications for the tender,
is shown here.
